Do students need prior coding experience for the SAAI Research Program?

The required starting level depends on the selected pathway. A beginner can enter a foundation-oriented research track, while a more advanced learner may begin with model comparisons or an independent project. Prior Python experience is helpful but not mandatory for every entry pathway. More important prerequisites include curiosity, willingness to work through unfamiliar ideas, attention to evidence and readiness to revise work after feedback. Diagnostics can be used to identify gaps in coding, mathematics, data handling or conceptual understanding before the main project begins. When a prerequisite gap is found, the learner may receive a preparatory lesson or practice task rather than being pushed into an advanced activity without the necessary foundation.
