What is the SAAI Research Program?

The SAAI Research Program helps students move from using artificial intelligence tools to understanding and investigating how AI systems work. Learners study datasets, tokenisation, vectors, model behaviour, classification, evaluation metrics, experiment design and research communication. They apply these ideas through notebooks, model-training challenges, comparative experiments and mentor-guided projects. The learning journey follows SAAI’s applied approach: students design an investigation, develop the technical work, deploy or demonstrate the output where relevant, and defend their decisions using evidence. Depending on the selected pathway, a learner may build a sentiment-analysis pipeline, concept detector, local-language model experiment or another approved AI research project. Evidence can include datasets, notebooks, source code, model-comparison tables, visualisations, technical documentation, a research paper and a final defence. The program creates a structured opportunity to produce research-quality work; publication or journal acceptance remains dependent on the quality of the work and external review.
